Abstract
This article investigates the transformation of a meta-organization (M-O) to facilitate sustainable transitions, emphasizing social and environmental impacts. Drawing on a longitudinal case study of CNS (Consorzio Nazionale dei Servizi) (Stake, 1995), this research explores the evolving managerial practices that support CNS's role as a transition intermediary (Berkowitz et al., 2024). Findings highlight governance reforms (Reypens et al., 2021; Ahrne & Brunsson, 2008), participatory decision-making processes (Kivimaa et al., 2019), and co-management strategies (Chaudhury et al., 2016; Rasche et al., 2013) as key enablers for navigating tensions inherent in sustainability transitions. The study contributes to the literature by providing practical insights into how M-Os can effectively mediate transformative change while balancing autonomy and dependency among their members (Berkowitz & Bor, 2024; Berkowitz et al., 2020).
